Some Polyclad Flatworms from the Hawaiian Islands

چکیده
ONE MAY SUPPOSE that a rich polyclad fauna exists along the shores of the Hawaiian Islands, but our knowledge of Hawaiian polyclads is, in fact., very limited. As far as I can ascertain, only the follo.wing species are recorded from the Hawaiian Islands in the literature: Planocera hawaiiensis Heath, 1907; Taenioplana teredini Hyman, 1944; and 5tylochoplana inquilina Hyman, 1950. The first merits further examination, but the specimens cannot be located. Three further species from Hawaii have been received for identification, from the United States National Museum, and furnish the material for the present article, which thus adds something to our small knowledge of the polyclad fauna of these islands. All three species belong to the Acotylea and to the section Schematommata. As the taxonomic categories that concern these three species have been carefully defined in a recent publication (Hyman, 1953a), there appears no need for repetition of these definitions here.

TTX-Bearing Planocerid Flatworm (Platyhelminthes: Acotylea) in the Ryukyu Islands, Japan
Polyclad flatworms comprise a highly diverse and cosmopolitan group of marine turbellarians. Although some species of the genera Planocera and Stylochoplana are known to be tetrodotoxin (TTX)-bearing, there are few new reports. In this study, planocerid-like flatworm specimens were found in the sea bottom off the waters around the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The bodies were translucent with brown re...
متن کاملSpecies Variation and Diversity
Polyclad flatworms resemble a taxon with an incredible diversity in tropical waters (Newman & Cannon, 1994; see section: Taxonomy). For quite a long time, the colour pattern of the splendidly coloured worms alone has been considered sufficient for their classification (Hyman, 1954, 1959). However, it has been shown that for identification of many species this is not enough for a reliable identi...
متن کاملPredation and Defence
Polyclad flatworms are soft, juicy, and delicate worms. During evolution they had to evolve strategies to protect themselves from all the hungry reef animals (especially fish and crustacea) that might eat them. One general principle is camouflage which means in first line to become invisible by being exclusively active at night or by matching both the texture and the colour of the food they pre...
متن کاملA New Polyclad Turbellarian Associating with a H ermit Crab in the Hawaiian Islands
AT THE REQUEST of Dr. Ernst S. Reese of the Universi ty of Hawaii the wri ter has studied seven specimens of a polyclad turbellarian found in the shells of Trocbus sand taicbensis occupied by the hermit crab Calcines latens in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaiian Islands. Accord ing to Dr. Reese ( in litt. ) the worm wraps itself around the abdomen of the crab and usually occurs deep in the spira l cavi...
متن کاملEvolution of flatworm central nervous systems: Insights from polyclads
The nervous systems of flatworms have diversified extensively as a consequence of the broad range of adaptations in the group. Here we examined the central nervous system (CNS) of 12 species of polyclad flatworms belonging to 11 different families by morphological and histological studies. These comparisons revealed that the overall organization and architecture of polyclad central nervous syst...
